GTC, part of the BUUK Infrastructure Group, are looking for Project Engineer - SCADA who would like to help us reach our mission to “earn customer loyalty and drive business growth by providing consistently excellent service”.

Purpose of this role

To provide hands-on SCADA and substation engineering expertise supporting the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of electricity networks.

 

This is a delivery-focused engineering role, requiring proven experience working within live UK substation environments under formal safety and authorisation frameworks.

The role spans:

SCADA/NMS ownership and optimisation

Commissioning and integration of substation control systems

Support to operational networks (primarily 33kV, with progression to 132kV)

You will bridge the gap between field delivery, operational engineering, and SCADA programme leadership.

Your key responsibilities are

Own and maintain SCADA / NMS system performance, stability, and configuration control

Support real-time operational visibility and control of the electricity network

Deliver integration of RTUs, PLCs, protection relays, and automation systems

Lead and execute substation commissioning activities, including:

FAT / SAT

I/O checks

Point-to-point testing

Firmware and configuration management

Work safely within live substation environments in accordance with SSOW procedures

Support and apply DNO/IDNO operational and safety standards

Contribute to the development of digital substation and SCADA standards

Support OT cybersecurity improvements aligned to recognised frameworks (e.g. NIST)

Improve system resilience, testing regimes, and operational performance

Maintain accurate and auditable technical documentation and asset records

Provide technical insight and reporting to SCADA programme leadership

Collaborate closely with operations, commissioning teams, and programme delivery

Qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent industry experience)

Experience/Knowledge

 

Proven, hands-on experience working in live UK substation environments (LV, HV, and 33kV minimum)

Demonstrable experience operating under formal UK authorisation frameworks, such as:

Competent Person / Authorised Person (or equivalent)

Or clear evidence of working within DNO/IDNO safety rules and access procedures

Strong practical experience with:

SCADA / NMS platforms

RTUs, PLCs, and protection relays

Substation control and automation systems

Experience commissioning and integrating electrical infrastructure, including field-based activities

Working knowledge of:

UK Safety Rules, SSOW, switching processes, and access to substations

UK engineering standards and regulatory frameworks

Abilities/Skills

Strong practical engineering mindset with the ability to operate confidently on-site

Systems thinker with strong problem-solving and fault-finding capability

Able to balance project delivery and operational support

Effective communicator across engineering, operations, and programme teams

High attention to safety, compliance, and configuration control

Proactive and accountable, with a strong focus on continuous improvement

Desirable

Experience at 132kV or higher, within DNO / IDNO / Transmission environments

Previous SAP / AP authorisation (or ability to gain)

Professional registration (IEng / CEng) or working towards

Experience delivering SCADA or automation systems in primary substations

Knowledge of OT cybersecurity frameworks (e.g. NIST, IEC 62443)

NEBOSH / IOSH certification

EUSR (CSCS) Card

Experience contributing to engineering standards or system design

Conditions of Employment

You are required to have your criminal records checked through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This is due to going into customers’ homes.
You will be required to participate in a standby rota.
You will hold a driving licence.
